STANLEY L1A1 PRISMATIC MILITARY COMPASS NATO BRITISH ARMY BARKER MK 3 M-73 M-88. A very rare Stanley L1A1 Prismatic Military Marching compass. Originally designed by Francis Barker Ltd, this compass is a descendant of the legendary MKIII that was in use throughout the second world war. The prototype was designed by Francis Barker Ltd for the UK Military in the 1980s. The Ministry of Defence then passed the plans of the prototype on to Stanley, who put it into production.
This led to an acrimonious legal dispute between Francis Barker Ltd and the Ministry of Defence. Stanley went on to manufacture the L1A1, but after a very short production run (said to be less than one month), beset with technical problems, the L1A1 was abandoned and replaced by the Stanley G150. Barker went on to develop their own lighweight military compass, the very successful M-88. Very few L1A1s were ever made and this is now a very rare compass. Length (excluding thumb loop): 88mm. Material: brass case, mother of pearl dial. The compass is in good condition, and in working order. There are bubbles in the compass fluid, but the compass still finds North. The night lights are no longer luminous. There is a small amount of wear to the black painted finish. The mother of pearl compass card is in very good condition. There is a NATO stock number engraved on the base, along with a serial number and L1A1.
I have several other compasses listed at the moment. Please check out my other listings. _gsrx_vers_841 GS 7.0.16 (841).
